How I Went From Doula to Marketing Guide for Birth Workers (and Why AIME Exists)
If you’re a birth worker who’s ever felt like visibility was a full-time job in itself, get cozy because this story is for you.
You’ve probably tried to do “just enough” with marketing: post when you can, share when you’re inspired, pop into Canva when you remember. You know you need a presence online. You want a website you’re proud of. But between attending trainings, supporting clients, navigating your own family life (and recovering from those overnight shifts), who has the time, energy, or clarity to write content week after week?
And what about AI? Everyone's talking about it. You’re curious, but you don’t want your posts suddenly sound glossy and well, robotic. You want your content to sound like you, not like a corporate intern.
That’s why I created AIME — The AI Marketing Engine — a membership designed for birth workers who are tired of struggling with content to promote their business, and want a gentler, more doable way to stay visible.
But AIME wasn’t a calculated move by a shrewd entrepeneur, part of some grand plan. It came from a big shift in my own business.
The Unexpected Shift From Birth Work to Business Support
In 2015, I had my first baby while living abroad. It was a struggle. A year later, I stumbled into a “How to Become a Doula” workshop and felt a full-body yes. I wanted to help new parents feel supported in the way I hadn’t been. That passion led to my first postpartum client in 2017, and I launched my online presence in early 2018.
Then came our second baby in 2019, and before her arrival, I started looking at how to bring some of my work online. I created opt-ins, ran a newsletter, tried voice note-based doula care offers, and earned my sleep consulting certification in 2021. I created a course. I learned everything I could about online business. I tried every marketing tactic under the sun.
But after all that work, I started to notice something unexpected: it wasn’t the baby care content people were asking me for. It was help with their marketing and their baby businesses.
When Birth Workers Started Asking for Help
In 2024, I began using ChatGPT more intentionally. I created a custom GPT to help me like a VA, copywriter, and creative assistant. And honestly? It helped my overwhelmed brain so much.
Other birth workers noticed. Friends and clients started asking, Can you help me use this tool? My business coach invited me to teach a workshop on how I was using ChatGPT. Meanwhile, my actual doula offers were kind of stalling out.
That’s when I realized that the demand had shifted. My doula business wasn’t fizzling because my attention was elsewhere. I had given it everything. But what birth workers were asking for was something different.
They wanted help with their visibility. They wanted guidance that felt grounded and kind. They wanted a way to stay consistent online without sacrificing their sleep or soul.
And they wanted to understand ChatGPT without the shame or overwhelm.
The Moment AIME Became Clear to Me
During the 2024 holiday break, I thought: What if I created a low-lift membership that gave birth workers just enough structure and support to stay visible without draining them?
I pay for a few low-cost memberships to help me with my marketing, myself, and I realized there was room for one made just for this niche — where ChatGPT isn’t a gimmick, but a helpful collaborator.
That’s how AIME — The AI Marketing Engine — was born.
What I included was every bit as intentional as what I left out.
No curriculum. No group calls. No hype squad.
Just simple, steady prompts and gentle structure for birth workers who want to keep their business moving without burning out.
The Burnout Behind the Birth Work
If you’ve ever…
scrolled through your Instagram with idea what to post
posted something you didn’t feel proud of, just to stay “active”
compared yourself to more confident, polished peers
felt like you’re constantly chasing clients — or else felt overwhelmed the work load
…you’re not alone.
The feast-or-famine nature of this work makes marketing feel urgent one week and impossible the next. And because the field is so emotionally demanding, it’s way easier to park visibility in the back seat, especially when marketing ourselves feels like a popularity contest we didn’t sign up for.
Let’s be honest: birth worker burnout is real. And we don’t talk enough about how much of it comes from trying to figure out the business side alone.
AIME Is My Gentle Rebellion
In some online spaces, I’ve been told that birth workers who use AI can’t possibly be “good doulas.” That selling a $9/month subscription is exploitative. That self-promotion is always ‘salesy’ and comes across as desperate.
But I see it differently.
I believe that you can be a grounded, ethical, deeply compassionate birth worker and still want a business that’s visible, sustainable, and nourishing to run and market.
And I believe your marketing doesn’t have to be poetic, perfect, or strategic to work. It just has to be consistent, and yes, it can be entirely true to you.
Why Me? Because I’ve Been You
I’m an immigrant twice over, a linguist, a mother, and a former ESL teacher. My superpower has always been helping people find the words they really want to say, whether it’s in a new language, a new life stage, or a new business.
I didn’t go viral. I never hit six figures. But I stayed. I kept learning. I kept helping.
I’ve seen the highs and lows of online business. I’ve felt the crash after a launch with no sales. And I’ve wondered what I was even doing, like most of us have.
And now, I’m offering a simpler way forward for others like me.
